David Whyte explores how self-compassion is a form of faith in our unique gifts
Full Description

Compassion is a form of faith; self-compassion is a faith in the way each of us is made for this world. So often we block self-compassion by standing in our own way, by refusing to use our eyes and ears, and hiding our individual voice.

In this talk, David Whyte explores innocence as a faculty of compassion, defining it as the ability to look at that world with fresh eyes, and to hear as if for the first time. Using his own poetry and some of his most cherished favorites poems written by others, David Whyte looks at the quality of innocence as a source of courage, compassion, and self-knowledge.

David Whyte

About David Whyte

David Whyte grew up with a strong, imaginative influence from his Irish mother among the hills and valleys of his father’s Yorkshire. He now makes his home in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The author of twelve books of poetry and four books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in marine zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, Amazon, and Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures, and workshops. David’s life as a poet has created a readership and listenership in three normally mutually exclusive areas: the literate world of readings that most poets inhabit, the psychological and theological worlds of philosophical inquiry, and the world of vocation, work, and organizational leadership.

Generous, quiet compassion

I've listened to this talk at least fifty times, and still now every time I listen it softens me and melts me into myself. Whyte uses both his own poetry and that of others to delve into that space between us and our self-doubt, us and our faith in ourselves and the world. This talk is absolutely shattering and I highly, highly recommend it.

Review for The Poetry of Self-Compassion

echoing Nikki's review--this cd was recommended to me at least 8 years ago, and in that time I've bought it several times because I keep giving mine away. I also listen every 6 months or so, and each time I am encouraged and strengthened in my own journey of self-compassion and acceptance. These words inform my life on a daily basis--thank you, David.

Review for The Poetry of Self-Compassion

This recording continues to change my life. I listen to the whole thing about every six months and always hear parts that seem like I've never heard them before. Brilliant. Entertaining. Will change your life if you allow for that.
